Eastern Avenue / Sunset Avenue Improvements

Barnhill Contracting Company partnered with NCDOT to deliver the Eastern Avenue and Sunset Avenue Improvements project, a major design‑build effort focused on improving connectivity, safety, and traffic flow between Rocky Mount and Nashville. The project included widening Eastern Avenue to four lanes, constructing multiple roundabouts, improving drainage, and converting the Sunset Avenue bridge over I‑95 into a full interchange—providing long‑sought access to the interstate for the surrounding community.

Delivered through a design‑build approach, the project required close coordination between engineering, construction, and stakeholders, allowing work to progress efficiently while adapting to evolving conditions. Much of the construction was completed while maintaining traffic, requiring detailed phasing plans and continuous communication to ensure safety for motorists and crews alike.

Over the course of construction, Barnhill’s team installed extensive roadway and drainage improvements, including thousands of linear feet of storm drain, curb and gutter, and significant asphalt paving. The project also supported long‑term economic development by improving access for local businesses and positioning the corridor for future growth.

Despite its scale and complexity, the project was completed with a strong focus on quality, safety, and collaboration. The improved corridor is enhancing mobility, reducing congestion, and providing lasting benefits to the community.
