Shared with the Southern Shores Volunteer Fire Department, the facility was designed to improve emergency response capabilities while creating a safer, more efficient, and resilient environment for first responders who serve residents and the millions of visitors who travel to the region each year.
Delivered using the Construction Manager at Risk (CM at Risk) delivery method, the new station replaces outdated facilities with a purpose-built emergency services complex designed to support the evolving operational needs of Dare County EMS. As one phase of the county’s broader EMS facilities improvement program, EMS #4 Southern Shores reflects Dare County’s continued investment in dependable public safety infrastructure that will serve the community for decades to come.
The station introduces a wide range of operational improvements that enhance emergency response readiness, improve working conditions, and increase efficiency for emergency medical personnel. Expanded ambulance bays provide sufficient space to house emergency vehicles while allowing crews to complete daily inspections, equipment checks, and routine maintenance indoors. By eliminating the need to move ambulances outside for inspections, the facility improves operational efficiency while protecting vehicles and equipment from the coastal environment.
The building incorporates advanced technology designed to improve both personnel safety and building performance. Modern vehicle exhaust extraction systems help prevent harmful exhaust gases and airborne contaminants from entering crew living quarters and shared spaces, creating a healthier environment for EMS professionals who work 24-hour shifts. Dedicated dispatch notification technology delivers emergency alerts directly to Station 4 without increasing unnecessary radio traffic throughout the county, reducing overnight noise while ensuring rapid response when emergencies occur.
