RePower South – Berkeley County Facility
The 95,000 SF Berkeley County Recycling and Recovery Facility is now the most advanced Mixed Waste Processing facility on the East Coast. The turnkey recovery system plant processes 50 tons-per-hour of mixed waste sourced from Berkeley County to recover recycled commodities and a fuel feed-stock. Advanced technology, including NRT optical sorters and Max-AI® Autonomous QCs (AQCs) enable the system to run with minimal manual sorters.
Development of sorting systems and equipment within the facility was handled by Bulk Handling Systems. Barnhill and BHS worked extensively to deliver a quality project for RePower. Bulk Handling Systems is a worldwide leader in the innovative design, engineering, manufacturing and installation of sorting systems and components for the solid waste, recycling, waste-to-energy, and construction and demolition industries. BHS is also the home of Max-AI® technology, a breakthrough artificial intelligence that identifies materials, makes intelligent decisions and directs equipment such as robotic sorters. BHS has built some of the largest and most durable MRFs in the world – and they are achieving the highest throughput, recovery, and purity rates in the industry.
Beyond recycling, the facility is able to recover non-recyclable papers and plastics for production of ReEngineered Feedstock™ – a high quality, low carbon renewable fuel sold to industry, cement, and utility customers to replace coal in production processes.
DETAILS: Barnhill delivered a 95,000 SF recycling and recovery facility for RePower South in Moncks Corner, South Carolina. The design-build project supports the processing of mixed waste through an advanced system designed to recover recyclable materials while diverting waste from landfills.
SCOPE OF WORK: The project included construction of the new processing facility along with the infrastructure and spaces required to support RePower South’s operations. The facility incorporates advanced mixed-waste sorting and recovery systems, including NRT optical sorters and Max-AI® Autonomous QC technology. The project also included administrative and employee areas such as offices, conference and training rooms, break areas, locker rooms and other support spaces.
SOLUTION: Barnhill used a design-build approach to coordinate the building, specialized processing equipment and supporting infrastructure within a single project delivery strategy. Close coordination with RePower South, LS3P, Bulk Handling Systems and other project partners helped integrate the highly specialized sorting and recovery systems with the facility itself while providing the operational and employee spaces needed to support the plant.
