Apex Friendship Middle School
Located in Apex, North Carolina, Apex Friendship Middle School is a modern educational campus constructed for the Wake County Public School System to accommodate one of the fastest-growing student populations in North Carolina. Designed by Perkins+Will, the new middle school provides flexible learning environments that support collaboration, technology integration, and student achievement.
The campus features academic classrooms, science laboratories, collaborative learning commons, media center, gymnasium, auditorium, cafeteria, administrative offices, outdoor gathering areas, and athletic facilities designed to create an engaging environment for both students and educators. The building emphasizes daylighting, durability, security, and adaptable educational spaces that support evolving instructional methods.
Serving as Construction Manager at Risk (CMAR), Barnhill partnered with Wake County Public School System and Perkins+Will throughout preconstruction and construction to manage budget, schedule, constructability, and quality. Through collaborative planning and proactive project management, Barnhill successfully delivered a high-performance educational facility that will serve the Apex community for decades.

SCOPE OF WORK: Construction Manager at Risk delivery including preconstruction services, new middle school construction, site development, classrooms, STEM laboratories, media center, gymnasium, auditorium, cafeteria, administrative offices, outdoor learning areas, utilities, parking, student drop-off, landscaping, and supporting infrastructure.
SOLUTION: Barnhill partnered closely with Wake County Public School System and Perkins+Will to deliver a modern middle school through the CMAR delivery method. Early collaboration, disciplined cost management, and proactive scheduling resulted in a flexible educational environment designed to support student success, faculty collaboration, and long-term community growth.
