Delivered using the Construction Manager at Risk (CM at Risk) delivery method and designed by Oakley Collier Architects, the new 7,281-square-foot station replaces an aging facility with a purpose-built environment that supports today’s emergency medical professionals while preparing the county for future growth and increasing service demands.
The new EMS #9 Kitty Hawk station was designed to improve operational efficiency, enhance response readiness, and provide emergency medical personnel with the resources needed to serve residents and visitors throughout the region. As one of the busiest tourist destinations on the East Coast, the Outer Banks experiences significant seasonal population increases, making dependable emergency medical services essential. The new facility provides Dare County EMS with expanded capacity and modern infrastructure to support high-quality patient care and rapid emergency response.
The station features enlarged apparatus bays designed to accommodate today’s larger ambulances and emergency response vehicles while allowing crews to safely and efficiently access equipment during emergency calls. Updated medical supply storage, decontamination areas, and support spaces improve daily operations and help maintain readiness for emergency response under a variety of conditions. Every element of the building was planned to create an efficient workflow that supports emergency personnel while reducing response times whenever possible.
