Barnhill Building Group completed the Davidson County Courthouse Addition and Renovation, a major Design-Build courthouse construction project that expanded judicial capacity while modernizing one of the county’s most important public facilities. Located in Lexington, North Carolina, the project included a 76,100-square-foot addition and a 9,500-square-foot renovation, creating an 85,600-square-foot courthouse complex designed to better serve Davidson County residents for decades to come.

The courthouse expansion was developed to accommodate the county’s growing judicial needs while improving operational efficiency for court personnel, county departments, and the public. The project added new District and Superior Court courtrooms, expanded judge’s chambers, District Attorney offices, Clerk of Court facilities, Guardian ad Litem offices, Register of Deeds operations, Juvenile Services, and Security functions. These improvements significantly increased the courthouse’s ability to manage court operations while providing a safer, more functional environment for employees and visitors.

One of the project’s most significant accomplishments was physically connecting courthouse facilities originally constructed in 1958 and 2000 into one unified building. The new addition created a seamless internal circulation system that improved security, accessibility, and operational efficiency while allowing court personnel and visitors to move easily throughout the expanded courthouse complex.

Barnhill delivered the project using the Design-Build delivery method, providing close collaboration between the owner, architect, and construction team throughout planning and construction. Work included selective demolition, hazardous material abatement, storm drainage improvements, underground utilities, paving, landscaping, fencing, and new site circulation. These upgrades enhanced both the appearance and long-term functionality of the courthouse campus while improving public access and site security.

Inside the building, Barnhill constructed modern courtrooms equipped with durable finishes, integrated technology, secure circulation paths, and functional layouts designed to support efficient judicial proceedings. Administrative offices, conference spaces, public service counters, and circulation areas were also modernized to improve the daily experience for employees, judges, attorneys, jurors, and the public.

Throughout construction, Barnhill carefully phased work to allow courthouse operations to continue while renovations and additions were completed. Strategic sequencing minimized disruptions to daily court schedules and enabled county staff to maintain critical public services during construction. This collaborative approach helped Davidson County continue serving its residents while the facility underwent significant transformation.
