Located in Raleigh’s Midtown district, the 150,000-square-foot Coastal Credit Union Headquarters Renovation transformed an existing office building into a modern workplace designed to foster collaboration, flexibility, and employee engagement. Rather than constructing a new headquarters, Coastal Credit Union chose to reimagine its existing campus, creating an environment that supports today’s hybrid workforce while strengthening connections between employees and the surrounding North Hills community.
Designed by Ratio Architects, the redevelopment introduces open communicating stairways that encourage movement between floors, flexible collaboration spaces, private meeting rooms, indoor-outdoor gathering areas, and a two-story technology hub. A new pedestrian bridge provides direct access to nearby retail, dining, and community amenities, extending the workplace beyond the building itself.
The renovation also modernized the building’s exterior with charcoal brick, refined metal panel systems, patterned thin brick, wood-grain accents, and high-performance electrochromic Smart Glass that improves energy efficiency while maximizing natural daylight. Together, these architectural and technological enhancements create a workplace that reflects Coastal Credit Union’s culture while supporting long-term operational performance.
Barnhill completed the project while the headquarters remained operational, requiring careful planning, phased construction, and continuous coordination with Coastal Credit Union and the design team. Through nearly 400,000 man-hours, the project was completed with zero lost-time incidents, demonstrating Barnhill’s commitment to safety, quality, and exceptional project management.
The transformation earned industry-wide recognition, receiving the 2025 Carolinas AGC Pinnacle Award and the 2026 Triangle Business Journal SPACE Award for Top Redevelopment, recognizing excellence in commercial construction, workplace innovation, and redevelopment.
