Roseboro Elementary School

Roseboro Elementary School was funded through the Department of Agriculture’s Rural Development Program and included funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. When this project was originally bid, prices came in higher than the owner’s budget, and the Barnhill team immediately set to work to find ways to deliver the project within budget. Within three weeks, the Barnhill team produced $2 million in value engineering savings to Sampson County for review and the project proceeded with no delays.
The scope of work included the construction of the school which measures 68,000 SF and a comprehensive sitework package that included new sewer and water service, fire pumphouse, erosion control, landscaping and parking lots. The structure included a combination of construction methods. The first floor includes load-bearing masonry which supports the second floor mechanical mezzanine. The roof mezzanine is supported by a combination of structural steel joists, steel beams and columns, cold-formed trusses, metal stud walls and masonry. Bringing all these elements together seamlessly required close coordination of material and installation from three different subcontractors.
The interior finishes of the building included casework, solid surface countertops, carpet, vinyl composition tile, accessories, signage and ceramic tile. The hallways and corridors feature an epoxy terrazzo floor with three color patterns and skylights to allow for natural daylighting. The brick veneerĀ exterior is accentuated with a standing seam metal roof and large metal entrance canopies.
